Each record represents an individual and can be linked to other tables within the same project using project‑specific pseudoidentifiers. The dataset is subject to ongoing review, validation, and updates to ensure accuracy, consistency, and confidentiality. This table serves as a foundational dataset for defining the observational population and linking demographic variables to other socio‑economic information in the database.

Represents an individual’s identifier. Since 2005, the data frequency is monthly, but figures are compiled for the entire year. An annual copy of the National Registry has been available since 1978. From 1978 to 1996, the copy is dated December 1st. From 1997 onward, it is dated December 31st. The registry thus includes all national ID numbers issued by Registers Iceland each year up to 1978. Fyrsti stafur í kóða segir til um fæðingarland einstaklingsins sjálfs (0=fæddur á Íslandi, 1=fæddur erlendis). When classifying individuals by origin, Statistics Iceland follows a similar method to that used by Statistics Norway. The classification is based on the individual’s country of birth as well as the country of birth and origin of their parents. All residents are assigned a three-digit code. The first digit o the code indicates the individual’s country of birth (0 = Born in Iceland, 1 = Born abroad) The second digit represents the country of birth of the parents (0 = Both parents born in Iceland, 1 = One parent born abroad, 2 = Both parents born abroad) The third digit indicates the country of birth of the grandparents (0 = all grandparents born in Iceland, 1 = one grandmother or grandfather born abroad, 2 = two grandfathers, two grandmothers, or one of each born abroad, 3 = two grandmothers and one grandfather or two grandfathers and one grandmother born abroad, 4 = all four grandparents born abroad). Með ríkisfangslandi er átt við Ísland ef barn er fætt af íslensku foreldri. Að öðru leyti er miðað við hvaða ríki hefur gefið út vegabréf það eða skilríki sem viðkomandi hefur framvísað við skráningu í Þjóðskrá. Þeir sem hafa skilríki frá landsvæðum sem ekki teljast fullvalda, s.s. frá heimastjórnarsvæðum Palestínu, eru skráðir sem ríkisfangslausir. | Description |
Country of citizenship refers to Iceland if the child is born to an Icelandic parent. Otherwise, it is based on the country that issued the passport or identification document presented at the time of registration in the National Registry. Individuals who hold documents from territories that are not recognized as sovereign states—such as the Palestinian territories—are registered as stateless. The same applies to those born in the Baltic states who did not automatically acquire citizenship when those countries gained independence in 1991, but who have been issued documents as recognized non-citizens. A country of citizenship may remain listed in the National Registry even if that country no longer exists, provided the individual has not updated their registration. This is particularly relevant for citizens from the former Soviet Union, Czechoslovakia, and Yugoslavia. |

Þetta á sérstakega við um þá sem hafa lögheimili erlendis eða eru í hjúskap með útlendingi. Kóðar Þjóðskrár eru notaðar í örgögnum Hagstofu Íslands (sjá nánar um kóðana á : https://www.skra.is/um-okkur/utgafur-og-skjol/taknmal-thjodskrar/) Hagstofa Íslands birtir árlega hagtölur um hjónavígslur og hjúskaparslit. Hjónavígslur eru taldar ef að minnsta kosti annar aðili hjónabands var með lögheimili á Íslandi fyrir giftingu. Stofnun staðfestrar samvistar (hjúskapur tveggja einstaklinga af sama kyni) var heimiluð samkvæmt lögum nr. 87/1996 og er talin með hliðstæðum hætti og hjónavígslur. Með sama hætti teljast hjónaskilnaðir ef að minnsta kosti annar aðilinn hafði lögheimili á Íslandi eftir skilnað. Það sama gildir fyrir skilnaði að borði og sæng. Marital Status is registered by Registers Iceland and may change over time, including the removal of certain statuses from active use. This is particularly relevant for individuals residing abroad or those married to foreign nationals. The marital status codes used by Registers Iceland are applied in Statistics Iceland’s datasets (for more details on the codes, see: https://www.skra.is/um-okkur/utgafur-og-skjol/taknmal-thjodskrar/). Statistics Iceland publishes annual data on marriages and marital dissolutions. Marriages are included if at least one of the individuals had legal residence in Iceland prior to the marriage. The establishment of registered partnerships (marriage between two individuals of the same sex) was permitted under Act No. 87/1996 and is counted in a manner equivalent to marriages. Similarly, divorces are included if at least one party had legal residence in Iceland following the separation. The same criteria apply for legal separations. The termination of a marriage due to the death of a spouse is also included if at least one party had legal residence in Iceland at the time of death. |

Cohabitation indicates whether an individual is in a domestic partnership and shares the same legal residence with another person, without being married or listed under an unspecified marital status. There is no comprehensive legislation governing registered cohabitation in the National Registry, and the rights of individuals in such arrangements may vary depending on the context and area of law. Registered cohabitation can, however, affect the registration of paternity and custody of children in the National Registry. If no information is available under MARITAL_STATUS, the value of COHABITATION applies. In the case of conflicting entries, the registration under MARITAL_STATUS takes precedence. |
